  • How would you feel if your vehicle was used to commit crime

    Alert message sent 18/05/2017 09:31:00

Information sent on behalf of Police Scotland

Police Scotland is urging the public to lock up after two cars - a black Saab (reg. NX57 OMF) and a grey Landrover Freelander (reg. FE56 LUJ) - were taken during a sneak -in theft in the Seafield Gardens area of Aberdeen in the early hours of Wednesday May 17, 2017.

Subsequently, suspicious activity was reported in the Bucksburn, Ferryhill, Banchory and Northfield areas involving the Saab.

Detective Inspector Stuart McAdam said: "By leaving your vehicles insecure you are essentially giving thieves another tool to commit further crime.  These people don't seem to care where or who they target, therefore I cannot stress enough the importance of ensuring your vehicles are locked and secure when unattended and to make it impossible to gain access to your keys.

"In their hands - the wrong hands - your vehicle could also be a lethal weapon, and a weapon which could have fatal consequences if the worst was to happen.  This is nothing more than a thrill for these opportunistic thieves - but it is a thrill that could sadly, and ultimately, end up costing someone their life.

"I would urge you to help us ensure that this is never the case and ensure you don't assist, albeit inadvertently, with their crimes.  In the majority of cases there is one very simple solution - and that's to lock up."

He added: "I can assure the public that preventing these crimes and bringing these people to court is at the forefront of our policing priorities, but we need your help to ensure they don't stand a chance in the first place.

"In the majority of cases they are not overcoming elaborate security systems to gain access to your property and are simply trying house and car doors until they find one unlocked.

"I would also urge anyone with information about suspicious activity where you live to contact Police as soon as possible on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 if you would prefer to remain anonymous."
